KATHMANDU, June 28 – The 74th birth anniversary of the then General Secretary of the CP- UML, Madan Bhandari, is being observed today with various programs. The UML and the Madan Bhandari Foundation are jointly organizing these events to commemorate the people’s leader.
On this occasion, the UML Contact Coordination Committee held a morning rally. According to committee secretary R.C. Lamichhane, the rally was held from 7:30 to 8:30 AM, starting at Tripureshwor. The rally walked Thapathali, Maitighar, New Baneshwar before converging into a gathering in Tinkune. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel and Standing Committee Member Lalbabu Pandit were among those present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Madan Bhandari Foundation is hosting an interaction program titled “Three Decades of People’s Multiparty Democracy (PMD)” at the Rastriya Sabha Griha today. Prime Minister and Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli and former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, wife of late Bhandari, are scheduled to attend the event.
The UML has adopted the PMD, conceptualized by Bhandari, as its guiding ideology. The party endorsed PMD as the principal framework of the Nepali revolution during its Fifth National Convention.
Madan Bhandari was elected General Secretary of UML following the 4th National Convention of CPN (ML) in 1990 and the unification of CPN (ML)and CPN (Marxist) in 1991. He was re-elected General Secretary during the UML’s Fifth National Convention in 1992. Bhandari was also elected as a Member of Parliament from constituency area Kathmandu-1 in the 1991 general election.
Born on June 27, 195 in Dhungesanghu, Taplejung, to mother Chandrakala and father Deviprasad as their second son, Madan Bhandari died in a jeep accident in Dasdhunga, Chitwan, on May 16, 1993.
