KATHMANDU, June 18: The Supreme Court (SC) has relieved Gandaki Province Assembly lawmaker Rajiv Gurung (alias Deepak Manange), who was convicted in an attempted murder case, from his position on Wednesday.
A constitutional bench of the SC on Wednesday ruled that he was disqualified from the post of member of parliament. The bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut ruled that Manange was ineligible to be a candidate for the post.
Should Deepak Manange be in jail?

Although the petitioner had demanded that his post be dismissed from the beginning, the court has ruled that he will be relieved from the post only from the date of the verdict.
Advocate Birendra Raj Karki had filed a writ petition seeking cancellation of Gurung’s post of lawmaker, claiming that there was a legal provision that a person convicted of criminal charges and serving a jail term could not become a lawmaker. Hearing the writ petition, the constitutional bench issued a decision.
